I found this beautiful dress at the op shop and immediately thought it would look amazing as a Chanel inspired suit for my 5 year old. I thought the tip in the kick off post to use original details from the item being upcycled was a great idea. I kept the original sleeves in the jacket, just resized them as they had an amazing pleat detail. I also kept the original hem and lining in the dress. The dress I made is the “Pleatie Playsuit by Tadah Patterns”, and i drafted the jacket. Thanks for the great tips and inspiration.

I’d been hoarding, what I thought was, the white sheet of eyelet fabric with a pretty decorative edge. However, it turned out to be a shower curtain! LOL While I was going thru my patterns I came across that Violette Field Threads pattern and thought that eyelet would be a great match! Then I found that pretty light blue gauze with white polkadots on the clearance rack at the store and knew it would make the perfect skirt overlay for the eyelet. The lining for the entire bodice is fabric from a ladies white tee-shirt I upcycled (I was afraid that the eyelet fabric *might* have some openings where they shouldn’t…

This upcycle started as a fat eigth of the Michael Miller print, a yard of the pink to match, and a tunic that I made for myself a while back but didn’t like the way the fabric hung. When pulling fabric for this challenge, I happened to pull the Michael Miller print out of the shelves where the tunic was hanging (I’d been pondering what to do with it because I love the fabric just not on me). I noticed how well they went together and started trying to figure out what to do with them and the idea for this dress was born. While sorting thru my digital patterns,…

I’ve been holding onto this Michael Miller fabric for a while unsure what to do with it when this challenge started. I brought it with me to the flea market where I found a ladies tee-shirt and sheer blouse that matched the colors perfectly! I decided to make a shirt and shorts from those 2 tops and the yard of fabric. The 2 shirts into the one I made was a bit of a struggle because the sleeves were transofrmed from traditional sleeves into raglan style. While this would’ve been easy enough if I was making a smaller size, but since my little girl wears a size 14/16, I needed…

While I was looking at the leftover bits of the FQ I had of Michael Miller fabric I thought that the fussy cut kids would be cut as pockets. It was then that I decided to use them on an apron of sorts. Instead of the traditional apron, this one slips over the head. The red fabric is from a pair of womens pants. The cute print was fussy cut from a fat quarter. What you don’t see in the plastic bags that I also used for this project. After fusing them together to make a large sheet, it was cut to size and is actually sandwiched between the layers of red…

My name is Polly from My Petite Sophie (IG @mypetitesophie). I was very excited when I first heard of the Upcycling Challenge but due to previous engagements I thought I won’t be able to participate. Luckily the deadline was extended and here I am, at the last minute, submitting my project. 🙂 Some info about the dress I made: I am a very avid buyer of ‘fabric’ at thrift stores. The moment I saw this brand new skirt I knew I wanted to turn it into a dress for my big girl. With all that beautiful embroidery, who wouldn’t want that? I used the lining of the original skirt for…

Hello! Here is my submission for the Upcycling Challenge. This is my first time upcycling and I decided to start in my closet. I have two dresses that I have been hanging on to for a long time with hopes that I would wear them again one day. Both dresses were from the Liberty of London line from Target. I looked it up and they were run in 2010 and the last time I remember wearing either of them I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, who is about to turn 7. Neither are particularly my style, but what I love about them is the fabric, which is why I…

I am an architect that enjoys sewing as a hobby. Frequently I’m asked to create and alter costumes for local theatrical productions. Since my daughter and I frequently enjoy sharing sewing tips, tricks, and tales she suggested that I check out your blog. She thought the challenge would be a perfect fit for me to try. I agreed. Immediately I went to the closet and pulled out three tired old shirts that had seen better days. The real challenge was to bring some life back to the future garment. I considered glitter and rickrack and bows. I settled on a black sheer with bright flowers of complementary colors to do…

This year, my New Years’ Resolution was not to buy any new clothes for myself. If I needed something, I have to make it. When this Upcycling Challenge came up, it was taking my own personal challenge to the next level–not only not buy clothes, but now I shouldn’t buy fabric. So, I can only work with what I already have. For this challenge, I decided to turn my “outgrown” pants to something I can wear again. It seems that the overalls/pinafore look is the trend right now, so I decided to jump on it. I used new fabric from my stash to line the bib piece. I now have…
