2018 Upcycling Challenge

Tammy Westfahl

This is my submission for the upcycling challenge. I love to upcycle and for years have been reusing my husband’s clothes to make new items for my girls.  My upcycled outfit was made using Violette Field Threads Kate top and shorts pattern. For my outfit I used an old skirt my mother gave me and used fabric from the Hello Petal collection by Aneela Hoey for Moda fabrics. I used the original skirt to construct the bodice, straps and shorts. The top frills, lining, skirt and shorts ruffle were made with the Hello Petal fabric. I’ve been hoarding both the original garment and the new fabric for a while looking for the right projects for them. The original skirt had quite a few seams which made it challenging to get enough fabric for my pattern pieces. I liked the tip about deconstructing your original piece. I find that by doing so you often have more fabric than you thought. I also like to fit finished hems into my projects when possible. It’s nice to have one less step you need to complete.
Thank you for extending the challenge. I had my garments finished last Wednesday but my temperamental three year old wanted nothing to do with it. It took a couple of days of coercing to get her to try it on.
